Overview
The Veterinary Coronavirus Vaccines Landscape compiles and summarizes publicly available information on coronavirus vaccines that are in development and commercially available for domesticated animals. Vaccine candidates profiled in the Landscape span all four coronavirus genera and multiple animal species. CIDRAP receives support for development and maintenance of the veterinary Landscape from CEPI, the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations.
Methods
The Landscape launched in September 2026 with more than 150 vaccine candidates identified by the University of Bergen and CIDRAP, and the CIDRAP CVR team continues to update the Landscape regularly.
Inclusion and categorization
For inclusion in the Landscape, candidates must have been tested on an animal model (preclinical phase) or on a domesticated animal species intended as vaccine recipient (clinical phase), or be commercially available.
Candidates are classified according to the coronavirus genus: Alphacoronaviruses, Betacoronaviruses, Gammacoronaviruses, and Deltacoronaviruses. Within the genera, candidates are organized by phase of development and identified by the animal group that they target: camelids (camels, alpacas, and llamas), cattle, chickens, domestic cats, domestic dogs, mink, and swine.
Sources of information
All information posted on the Landscape comes from publicly available sources. Vaccine candidates are identified through searches on PubMed, the US Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service Product Summaries and Code Book, the European Union Veterinary Medicinal Products Database, published reviews of veterinary vaccines, and veterinary industry websites. US National Library of Medicine GenBank accession numbers and links are provided for coronavirus strains used in vaccine candidate development, when possible.
Data collection, analysis, and display
Relevant data on each vaccine candidate are recorded, including targeted virus, developer and/or manufacturer, the intended recipient species, vaccine platform, strain and antigen used to build the vaccine, adjuvant, documented dam-to-offspring passive immunity, animal models used in preclinical studies, immuno- and potency assays, evidence of natural human infection for the target virus, and any corresponding human vaccine.
Data on route of administration, number of doses, and clinical research location are only recorded for candidates that are in clinical development or commercially available. Countries or regions in which commercially available vaccines have been approved for use serve as an sample, and not a comprehensive list, and reflect the best available information. The date of last publication is displayed for all candidates in preclinical and clinical development.
