The Coronavirus Vaccines R&D Progress Tracker
The Coronavirus Vaccines R&D Roadmap (CVR) Progress Tracker follows scientific, regulatory, manufacturing, and policymaking activities that, if accomplished, will accelerate the development of broadly protective coronavirus vaccines. It highlights select research and policy outcomes that have been documented since the publication of the CVR in 2023.
The R&D Progress Tracker follows the framework of the CVR, and, along with the Coronavirus Vaccine Technology Landscape and the CVR Scholar Hub, guides and prioritizes progress toward coronavirus vaccines.

Topic Areas
Background and Approach
What are Topic Areas, Goals, and Milestones?
Topic area. The CVR is organized into 5 topic areas:
- Virology applicable to vaccine development
- Immunology and immune correlates of protection
- Vaccinology
- Animal and human infection models for coronavirus vaccine research
- Policy and financing
Goals. Across the 5 topic areas, 19 strategic goals identify long-range high-level research priorities for the development of broadly protective coronavirus vaccines.
Milestones. The 81 milestones describe the actions deemed necessary to achieve the strategic goals. The 25 high-priority milestones are considered critical for advancing broadly protective coronavirus vaccine R&D, based on input from the CVR steering group and taskforce.
Approach. Each completed or in-progress milestone highlights select research outcomes that serve as evidence of progress toward broadly protective coronavirus vaccines. Links to citations are provided when available, and statements that are not referenced reflect input provided by the CVR Steering Group or Taskforce. The R&D Progress Tracker reflects the documentation of research and policy outcomes since the publication of the CVR in 2023.
