High priority

Generate a collaborative international program to quickly identify, characterize, and share information on human coronaviruses, including antigenic information, in real time. Explore building on current systems such as the WHO’s Global Influenza Surveillance and Response System (GISRS).

Progress Highlights

The WHO Coronavirus Network (CoViNet) is a global network of 36 reference laboratories from 21 countries in all 6 WHO regions that support enhanced epidemiological monitoring and laboratory assessment of SARS-CoV-2, MERS-CoV and novel coronaviruses of public health importance; the first WHO CoViNet meeting occurred in Geneva in March 2024.

The Unity Studies initiative of the WHO GISRS is a harmonized approach to conducting targeted investigations, studies, and enhanced surveillance critical for assessing the risk of emerging respiratory pathogens of pandemic potential. During the 2025 meeting, participating sites were encouraged to select, adapt, and exercise a Unity Studies protocol during the interpandemic period to strengthen response readiness.
